Focus on Scotland
Focus on Scotland in the month of July for some great events that are lined up. Scroll down to see the list of events. You can enjoy Family Day on July 26, or “Treasure Island” Movie Night for Kids on July 31. This event is one not to miss! You have the entire month to "Focus on Scotland".
In 1891, Scotsman James Macpherson, a landscape architect from Trenton, NJ was hired by George and Sara Frelinghuysen to design the grounds of Whippany Farm, their summer home in Morristown, NJ. Born and educated in the British Isles, Mr. Macpherson was certain to have understood the requirements for creating both the English landscape Mrs. Frelinghuysen desired and the working farm Mr. Frelinghuysen sought. Today, Whippany Farm is known as The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and over a quarter million visitors annually enjoy Macpherson’s work.
Focus on Scotland pays tribute to the long and rich horticultural heritage that produced landscape designers of Macpherson’s caliber. Scotland’s gardens date back to the medieval age. Their beauty is enriched by the unique ecologies and plant life of this island nation. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Scottish gardeners were highly regarded as garden apprentices and managers. In the 18th and 19th century, plant exploration called for men with horticultural knowledge, physical stamina, and courage. Scottish plant explorers have brought back more species and varieties of new plants than any other nationality. Plant explorers like David Douglas, Robert Fortune and George Forrest changed the face of European and British landscape design, and ultimately the look of American gardens with their plant introductions. With its many notable botanists, authors, nurserymen, and seedsmen, Scotland has played a huge part in horticulture’s international story.
Focus on Scotland, a month long celebration of the Scottish gardening tradition include talks, tastings, tours, exhibits, demonstrations, and musical offerings. Presented by the Morris County Park Commission in partnership with The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, event sponsors include The Daily Record, Walkers, USA, C-I-E Tours International, and The Scottish Gourmet USA.
Focus on Scotland is the 5th annual “Focus On” series. Previous programs have included China, Mexico, Italy, and Japan. The “Focus On” programming was created to bring new audience to The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and offer its members and visitors an expanded view of the interconnected world of horticulture.
The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is located at 53 East Hanover Avenue in Morristown, New Jersey. Please call 973-326-7603 to register for any of the Focus on Scotland programs.
