Hog-Pen Rocks Hike and Historic Presentation
MORRISTOWN, NJ - The Morris County Park Commission, in cooperation with Historical Society of Boonton Township, the New Jersey Revolution Round Table, and Protect Our Wetlands, Water, and Woods (POWWW), present a hiking event to the Hogs’ Pen Rocks in Denville, part of the Jonathan’s Woods County Preserve. This FREE moderate hike that takes place, rain or shine, on Saturday, October 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. includes a discussion of the historic significance of the area, nature tours, marshmallow roasting, and hot dogs. It is recommended that participants bring their own water.
The event begins on Miller Drive in Boonton Township and proceeds to this historic area guided by trained naturalists. The Hog-Pen Rocks site is a natural enclosure of towering rocks where locals brought their livestock to protect them from the enemy during the Revolutionary War in 1780.

Discover Trail Tales at the Great Swamp!
CHATHAM TWP., NJ - On Saturday, October 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township, join in the fun for the annual Trail Tales event to celebrate Halloween in a unique way! Enjoy a memorable night of slightly spooky, silly, and nature themed storytelling designed to engage all ages. Hear everything from Native American legends, to tall tales, all along the dark, wooded trails! You never know who may be lurking around the next bend in the path, waiting to tell their story - maybe a pirate or a giant luna moth!
Small groups leave the Visitors Center every 15 minutes with a guide, listening for the wild nocturnal sounds of nature, and pausing to be entertained by storytellers along the way! Complimentary refreshments finish off this night of fun in the woods! Families, individuals, scout troops, and youth groups must preregister for a reserved time. This program is recommended for ages 4 and up, including fun-loving adults. Participants must preregister for a time slot by calling the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center at 973-635-6629.

MORRIS TWP., NJ-Come to Historic Speedwell, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, and Cooper Gristmill on Saturday, October 31 for an Historic Halloween experience. A scary and fun afternoon awaits visitors at Historic Haunting at Historic Speedwell from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.! Listen to terrifying ghost stories and participate in a variety of Halloween fun and games! Children are encouraged to come in costume and participate in an old-fashioned costume contest. Prizes are awarded to all winners!
Then, head over to Historic Halloween Happenings at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Simple celebrations surrounded Halloween in past years. Join in playing Halloween games, a scavenger hunt, sing special songs, decorate holiday cookies, and find out how costumes were created at home. Some Halloween fun before the holiday at Fosterfields, is Family Activity Center: Pumpkin Decorating on Sunday, October 25 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Select your very own pumpkin to decorate, and then play special games with a Halloween theme.

An Historic Haunting has A“wake”ned Historic Speedwell
MORRISTOWN, NJ - You are cordially invited to attend the 1864 wake of Stephen Vail, a family patriarch at Historic Speedwell in Morristown, on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a program call Death and Mourning. The Vail Home becomes the setting for a traditional 19th century funeral. Learn how the family would have prepared for this event including period dress, home decorations, and the casket. Mourners witness how Vail’s family would have prepared to host the event in their home, as well as, the customs and traditions that were carried out when someone died.
Follow the horse-drawn cart as it carries Stephen’s body to his home at Speedwell. Journey back to this period with authentically costumed interpreters. Share the reasons wakes were held in homes, and what preparations were made for the event. Tours are conducted every hour and preregistration is required.
