Insect Exploration

What makes an insect unique? Students find out as they sing the "insect song," transform a classmate into a bug, and observe and touch live invertebrates. In the extended program, students can explore the school grounds with a guide looking for hidden insect signs.

Skulls and Bones

Examine a wide variety of wildlife skulls and learn how each animal's teeth are adapted to its diet. Then compare leg and arm bones in humans to those of other animals to compare and contrast form and function. Use what you've learned to identify "mystery bones.

Two just-hatched robin babies. One yet to hatch.
Birds on the Nest

In an up-close investigation of real birds' nests, students make their own scientific discoveries by observing and collecting data. In the extended program, learn how tough it is to be a baby or parent bird through a hands-on simulation.

Owl Pellet Exporation

After an introduction to the amazing adaptations of New Jersey's owls using feathers, taxidermy mounts, and other artifacts, student pairs will dissect owl pellets and reconstruct the skeletons of their prey. (Add $30 materials fee)

Nature in Your Neighborhood

Students take a guided safari of their own schoolyard and learn that wildlife is everywhere! Focusing on life cycles, food chains, and other basic ecological concepts, guides will introduce students to the wonders of nature that have been hiding in plain sight!

Who's Been Here?

Children can examine a diverse collection of real signs left behind by animals and determine the who, when, where and why of what the wildlife has been up to! The extended program includes an outdoor hunt for animal signs on the school grounds.

Surviving in the Winter World

Snooze, Cruise, Choose, or Lose? New Jersey's animals all select one of these four behavioral adaptations to deal with winter. Who does what and why? Find out with hands-on activities and touchable nature artifacts.

The Incredible Journey

Become a raindrop and experience the amazing adventure of traveling through the water cycle and New Jersey's waterways firsthand. Take part in a hands-on demonstration to discover how pollution gets into our water supply. The extended program includes an outdoor walk to look for evidence of the water cycle and pollution.

On the Right Track

Children learn what tracks can tell us about animals as they try out the four mammal gaits with their own bodies. Then they apply math and observation skills to identifying mystery animal tracks and solving "track mysteries."
