Upcoming Events in 2013

Under the Floorboards

Friday, May 10 11am or 1pm

Come and learn more about Historic Preservation and find out about the plans for the future of the Vail House by taking a behind the scenes tour in the Historic Vail House basement, which will be restored and reinterpreted in the future.

Alfred Vail and the Natural World

Saturday, May 11, 1pm-3pm

Curiosity about the natural world was very poplar during the 19th century.  Using information from the same texts as Alfred Vail, children ages 6 and up are encouraged to explore the grounds of Historic Speedwell.  Examine different trees catalogued at the site in 1850, measure trees, and practice designing an authentic historic flower garden for the Vail House.

Food to Faces

Friday, May 17, 2pm-4pm

What we eat can say a lot about us.  In the 16th century, Italian painter Guiseppe Arcimboldo used pictures of food to create portraits of people.  Discuss artwork from this famous Renaissance artist, learn the basics of portraiture, and use images of food to collage a self-portrait.  We suggest participants bring a small mirror.  No prior artistic experience necessary.  As part of Food Revolution weekend this event is FREE

Snack and Learn

Friday, May 17 6pm-8pm

Enjoy a healthy snack while listening to a selection of lectures covering Genetically Modified Organisms, decoding food labeling, and the tools for combating childhood obesity.  For more information and to register, please contact Melanie Bump at 973 28506536.  As part of Food Revolution Weekend, this event is FREE
