Alfred Vail and the Natural World
Saturday, May 11, 1pm-3pm
Curiosity about the natural world was very poplar during the 19th century. Using information from the same texts as Alfred Vail, children ages 6 and up are encouraged to explore the grounds of Historic Speedwell. Examine different trees catalogued at the site in 1850, measure trees, and practice designing an authentic historic flower garden for the Vail House.
Food to Faces
Friday, May 17, 2pm-4pm
What we eat can say a lot about us. In the 16th century, Italian painter Guiseppe Arcimboldo used pictures of food to create portraits of people. Discuss artwork from this famous Renaissance artist, learn the basics of portraiture, and use images of food to collage a self-portrait. We suggest participants bring a small mirror. No prior artistic experience necessary. As part of Food Revolution weekend this event is FREE.
