Maple Sugaring Demonstrations

Maple Sugaring Demonstrations

All Ages.
The trees are tapped, and the firewood is chopped - it’s maple sugaring season at the Great Swamp OEC! Experience the fascinating process of maple sugaring from tree to pancake topping. If conditions are right, watch as staff identifies and taps maple trees and collects sap, and make syrup over a wood-fired evaporator. Taste-test different, delicious syrups, including syrup made at the Great Swamp OEC. Rain or shine.

Spend the day off from school getting an in-depth look into the lives of trees. Kids discover unique tree characteristics, from buds to bark, while enjoying a hike, interactive tree games, and creating a tree-themed craft.

Spend the day off from school learning all about the birds that visit feeders during the coldest time of year. Kids learn skills for bird observation and go on a hike to spot these feathered friends. End the day creating a pinecone feeder craft that will feed the winter birds in your own backyard!

Join an exciting, outdoor family adventure to experience traditional farm life as it was in the early 20th century. Enjoy an open-air, tractor pulled wagon ride, meet the friendly farm animals, learn the importance of ice harvesting and what tools were used, and stop by the Visitors Center and create your own craft to take home. Warm up in the cozy Farmhouse where seasonal foods are cooking on the wood-burning cook stove.
