The Columbia Trail, is a 16.5 miles of flat, multi-use, linear trail with natural and gravel tread. The trail spans segments of both Morris County (100.4 acres) and Hunterdon County. The Morris County section of the trail is 8.2 miles and runs through Washington Township to the border of Hunterdon County.  The Hunterdon County section of the trail is 8 miles and ends in High Bridge. The trail can be used for a variety of activities, including horseback riding, bicycling, hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

 Spring and Summer Activities:

Enjoy the solitude of the surrounding natural sites or take a more active approach on the trail and hike, bike or jog. Pack a lunch and fishing pole and follow the Columbia Trail to Schooley’s Mountain County Park at the Langdon Palmer Fishing Access Area on Fairview Avenue. Spend the day outdoors enjoying the beautiful farmland as you travel the trail or find a fishing spot along the South Branch of the Raritan River.

History:

In 1987, Columbia Gas Transmission Company acquired approximately 15 miles of abandoned railroad ROW for use as a pipeline corridor. Columbia decided to donate the surface rights of the ROW to the Morris and Hunterdon County Park Commissions in April 1998, as compensation for the disturbance of various public lands. Columbia Gas Transmission Company also agreed to provide the counties with installed trail, ready for public use.

Since 1998, the Morris County segment of Columbia Trail has been heavily used by equestrians, cyclists, hikers, joggers, and cross-country skiers, all of whom enjoy its relatively flat terrain.

Hours of Operation:

Columbia Trail is open daily Sunrise to Sunset throughout the year.
